Jeremiah’s Call and Our Commission

Today’s Reading: JEREMIAH 1:1–10

I don’t want to ruin it for you, but Jeremiah’s going to have a rough go of it.
* Jeremiah is worried about his youth and lack of eloquence.
* Yeah. He going to need some confidence.

So, God gives Jeremy a little pep talk. Actually, God gives him more than that.
* First, God explains how age and eloquence are more than accounted for by God’s sovereignty, especially in his guidance and inspiration (v. 7).
* He also tells Jeremiah plainly, “Do not be afraid…for I am with you” (v. 8).

This encouragement caught my attention; it reminds me of the Great Commission.

In Matt. 28, Jesus sends out his disciples… into all the world!
* There may be some reason there for trepidation (understatement) at such a command, but Jesus gives some solid cause for confidence.
* Even before the command to go, he establishes his absolute authority—namely, all authority in heaven and on earth is his.
* And if that weren’t enough, in Matt. 28:20, he says “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

God is sovereign, and he is with us.
* So many of us are still stuck in the attitude of Jeremiah 1:6, that we are not mature enough nor well-spoken enough.
* Rather, we should find boldness as we trust in the one who has all authority and has promised to be with us.
